Access information below to support your child's learning at home during semester 1 of Primary Infants 3.

Unit 1: Welcome back!

In this unit children will cover:

  • the characters from the book
  • the alphabet

They will practise:

  • asking how something is spelt
  • saying how something is spelt
  • asking "What are these?" and replying "They're..."
  • playing "I spy..."

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask them how to spell the names of the people in your family, e.g. "Can you spell 'Maria'?"
  • Play "I spy..." around the house or in the car - ask your child to teach you if you don't know how to play.
  • Read the story Welcome back! on page 4 of the class book.

Unit 2: Happy families

In this unit children will cover:

  • vocabulary related to family
  • numbers 20-100

They will practise:

  • saying He's/She's got... / He/She hasn't got ...
  • using his and her
  • comparing ages

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask your child to draw their family tree and talk about it.
  • Play bingo with numbers between 20 and 100.
  • Read the story Happy families on page 8 of the class book.

Unit 3: Food, food, food!

In this unit children will cover:

  • vocabulary related to food
  • telling the time

They will practise:

  • saying He's/She's got... / He/She hasn't got...
  • saying I like... / I don't like... / He/She likes... / He/She doesn't like...

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask your child to say what food they and their friends like and don't like.
  • Look in the kitchen and say what food you have and haven't got. 
  • Read the story Food, food, food! on page 16 of the class book.

Unit 4: A day at the zoo

IN THIS UNIT CHILDREN WILL COVER:

  • zoo animals vocabulary
  • comparative adjectives: bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, fatter, thinner, older
  • prepositions: next to, between, opposite 

THEY WILL PRACTISE:

  • saying 'The (elephant) is (bigger) than the (hippo).'
  • asking 'Where are ...?'
  • saying  'They're next to / between / opposite ...'

YOU CAN PRACTISE WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME IN DIFFERENT WAYS. YOU CAN:

  • Ask your child what's their favourite wild animal and why, e.g. "Because they're friendly and they aren't dangerous."
  • Ask your child what are the differences between different members of the family, and encourage them to make sentences using bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, fatter, thinner, older. 
  • Read the story A day at the zoo on page 24 of the class book.

YOU CAN PRACTISE WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME IN DIFFERENT WAYS. YOU CAN:

  • Ask your child to describe your local shopping street or area, using: There's a ... / There are ... / There aren't any ...
  • Ask your child to imagine and talk about their ideal or fantasy town, using: There's a ... / There are ... / There aren't any ...
  • Read the story In the town on page 32 of the class book.
