The TeachingEnglish – Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Framework is a guide to the development opportunities for teachers of English available from the British Council and other ELT providers.
Apart from being a qualifications framework, it also promotes and organises a range of opportunities through which teachers can develop across stages of their careers.
The framework encourages professionals and individual teachers to continuously:
- look for ways to deal with new challenges
- improve performance
- actively identify their own needs and ways to meet those needs
- make the framework an essential component of their professional life.
Starting |
You are a trainee teacher of English taking initial training or you are not qualified as an English teacher but working as one. |
Newly qualified | You are a qualified teacher of English in your first two years of practice, who is putting initial training into practice. |
Developing | You are a practising qualified teacher of English with more than two years of experience, and still want to consolidate your essential skills. |
Proficient | You are an experienced qualified teacher of English with strong all-round knowledge and competence as a teacher. |
Advanced | You are a highly experienced qualified teacher, who comfortably takes on leading roles, such as mentoring, and may be planning to develop more specialist skills. |
Specialist | You are a practising specialist, such as a teacher trainer, materials writer, syllabus & curriculum developer, head of department/manager, testing expert, adviser on ELT issues (primary, secondary, vocational etc.), researcher. |
The CPD framework is not a linear process, but reflects teachers' needs to sometimes go back to refresh themselves and learn new skills.
