Our Academic Team

Senior Teacher Kathy Byrne

Kathy has worked at British Council Romania since 2018 and loves working with Romanian learners of all ages.  ‘I love the willingness to learn and sense of fun that they bring to lessons’, she says.  Kathy began her teaching career in Madrid in 1999 and has worked in both teaching and teacher training in many different parts of the world since then, including Thailand, Malaysia, the U.K. and the Middle East

Teacher Laura Kiritescu

With over 10 years experience in teaching Englsh, Laura also teaches yoga to children and adults. She enjoys the creative aspect of her work and she brings her learning into the classroom. Her aim is to make the lessons relevant and practical for today's world, giving kids skills that they can immediately incorporate in their lives from mindfulness, well-being to critical thinking, and problem solving. She loves being in nature, foraging, learning about flowers and bees, and crafting.

Teacher Mateea Michinici

Mateea has a BA in English and Greek studies and a CELTA certificate and is on her way to getting her Master’s in English Linguistics and also adding TYLEC to her qualifications. She feels that the job helps her become a better teacher and a better person. She also speaks Greek and French and she loves literature, music, films, travelling, telling (pretty bad) jokes and video games. Speaking of which, she’s been the biggest fan of Lara Croft since 2008 and no one’s usurped her title ever since.

Teacher Minka Parashkevova

Dr Minka Paraskevova holds a Ph.D. in Scottish Theatre and Culture from  Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, a MSc in European Theatre from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, a BA in English Philology from Sofia University and a Trinity TESOL Cert. She has also a QTS in the UK since 2009 . Her work experiences vary in Prague, Dublin, London, Edinburgh, Reading, Sofia and Bucharest (remote). She is also a trained mathematician and a writer of children's literature and short stories. 

Teacher Moe Chekhar

Moe is a traveller who has been to over 40 countries and plans to visit all 200 of them in the future! He has been teaching English for 11 years in different parts of the world to more than 4,000 students with different cultural backgrounds and language levels! His lessons are usually fun, friendly, energetic, but also interactive as well as informative. Other hobbies of his are: sightseeing, photography, art, theatre, sharing experiences with people, food, and last but not least, adrenaline! 

Cluster Academic Lead Monika Nicolin-Żaczek

Born in Poland, Monika has an MA in English and Russian and is a holder of CELTA, CETYL, and DELTA. Before coming to Romania in 2010, she had worked for over a decade as a teacher, teacher trainer and academic manager in Warsaw, Poland and at summer English camps in London, UK. She is an avid language learner, and her biggest passion is kayaking and camping in the wilds of the Danube Delta.  

Teacher Natalia Chian

Natalia holds a BA in English and German Philology and an MA in American Studies. She has a CELTA qualification a TYLEC. Natalia first joined the British Council as a Teaching Assistant in 2017, qualifying as an English teacher a few years later. Besides her work, she spends most of her summers teaching at summer schools in the UK. In her free time, Natalia enjoys reading, travelling with her loved ones, and watching documentary movies and series.

Senior Teacher Nermine Rezkalla

"Teaching is very rewarding, and I love watching students develop using English." Originally from Cairo, Nermine has a BA in Political Science and holds the Cambridge CELTA and DELTA, as well as other international teacher qualifications. Nermine had been teaching English since 2005, before joining British Council Romania in 2010. She teaches all age groups and levels and is also a teacher trainer. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with family, travelling, and reading.

Teacher Oana Albert

Oana has teaching experience both in Romania and in the UK. She has worked with children from 4 to 16 years old, supporting them to achieve their expectations. She also knows the Braille alphabet and has the QTS for England, The last 5 to 6 years of her teaching career were in English online to children and adults from China, Taiwan and Romania. She has a solid experience of 15 years in teaching, she believes she still possess the raw enthusiasm and determination.

Teachers Riaz Mann

Riaz has been teaching English since 2009. He has a degree in Business Management, a CELTA and a DELTA. He has mainly taught in Japan, but also in Italy, the UK, and Romania. His hobbies are watching football (huge Norwich City supporter), going to music gigs and visiting new places. The thing he enjoys the most about teaching is seeing students enjoying communicating in English and using what they have learned naturally in everyday conversation.
