Unit 1: Hello!

In this unit children will cover:

  • the names of the characters
  • "What's your name?" and "How old are you?"
  • numbers 1-6

They will practise:

  • saying their name and their age: "I'm..."
  • asking each other their name and their age: "What's your name?" and "How old are you?"
  • counting up to six objects
  • singing a song about numbers
  • listening to a story

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask them to introduce their toys to you in English by pretending to be the toy, for example, "What's your name?" "I'm SpongeBob."
  • Ask them to count different items in the house, for example, "How many chairs can you see?" Don't forget to point or touch the object so that they know what to count, even if they don't know the word in English yet.
  • Ask them to sing any songs they have sung in class to you, for example the song on page 6 of the class book.
  • Ask them to use the pictures on page 8 of the class book to tell you the story (this can be in their first language with just the key words in English).

Unit 2: My class

In this unit children will cover:

  • classroom instructions (stand up, sit down, open/close your books, point, look, listen)
  • "What's this?" "It's a..."
  • shapes (triangle, circle, square)
  • polite language ("Pass me the ... please", "Here you are.", "Thank you.")

They will practise:

  • asking and saying what classroom objects are: "What's this?" "It's a pencil."
  • responding to classroom instructions: stand up, sit down, open/close your books, point, look, listen
  • singing a song with classroom instructions
  • listening to a story
  • making a picture using shapes
  • acting situations using polite language

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask them what objects they have in their schoolbag, for example, "What's this?" "It's a book / eraser / pencil."
  • Play Simon Says with the classroom instructions they have learnt. Watch a video to see an example of this game.
  • Find examples of shapes in your house or car, for example, a square table. Ask your child "Is it a square / circle / triangle?"
  • Ask your child to use please and thank you in English when they ask for things.
  • Ask them to sing any songs they have sung in class to you, for example the song on page 12 of the class book.
  • Ask them to use the pictures on page 14 of the class book to tell you the story (this can be in their first language with just the key words in English).
  • Review the language from Unit 1 - revision is very important to help them retain the words and phrases they are learning. For example, ask them to count the pencils, chairs, erasers, etc, on page 11 of the class book.

Unit 3: My colours

In this unit children will cover:

  • colours (red, yellow, blue, black, brown, white)
  • "It's yellow." and "It's a yellow bag."
  • "What's your favourite colour?" "It's..."

They will practise:

  • saying what colour something is: "It's yellow." and "It's a yellow bag."
  • asking each other what their favourite colour is
  • singing a song about colours
  • listening to a story
  • following spoken instructions to colour in parts of a picture the correct colour

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask your child the colours of objects that you can see. It is especially helpful if you can do this with objects they know in English, such as pencils or bags, so they can practise correctly putting the adjective before the noun, for example "a red pencil" (correct), not "a pencil red" (incorrect).
  • Ask your child to show you the pictures they have coloured in class, and tell you what the colours are. Praise them for neat colouring, and for following the instructions well to help them feel proud of the work they are doing.
  • Encourage them to draw and colour pictures, then describe them to you in English.
  • Ask them what their toys' favourite colours are, for example, "What's your teddy's favourite colour?"
  • Ask them to sing any songs they have sung in class to you, for example the song on page 20 of the class book.
  • Ask them to use the pictures on page 22 of the class book to tell you the story (this can be in their first language with just the key words in English).
  • Review the language from previous units - revision is very important to help them retain the words and phrases they are learning. For example, ask them to find a picture of a yellow chair or a red book, etc, in their class book.

Unit 4: My toys

In this unit children will cover:

  • toys (ball, bike, car, doll, kite, robot)
  • "What's your favourite toy?" "It's..."
  • "Where's ...?"
  • "It's here." and "It isn't here."
  • colours (orange, green, pink)
  • polite language ("Here's a ... for you." "Thank you.")

They will practise:

  • asking and saying what toys are: "What's this?" "It's a ball."
  • asking each other what their favourite toy is
  • asking where something is and saying "It's here." or "It isn't here."
  • singing a song about toys
  • listening to a story
  • saying what colour a butterfly is: "It's orange, green and pink."
  • acting situations using polite language

You can practise with your child at home in different ways. You can:

  • Ask your child to tell you what toys they have.
  • Play a memory game - hide different toys around the room, then ask your child to find them using the phrase "Where's ...?" Encourage them to say "It isn't here." for each place they look until they find it.
  • Encourage your child to draw or paint pictures, then tell you what the colours are.
  • Ask them to sing any songs they have sung in class to you, for example the song on page 26 of the class book.
  • Ask them to use the pictures on page 28 of the class book to tell you the story (this can be in their first language with just the key words in English).
  • Encourage your child to say "Here's a ... for you." each time they bring something home from school (e.g. a drawing, a letter from the teacher) for you.
  • Review the language from previous units - revision is very important to help them retain the words and phrases they are learning. For example, ask them to count how many of each toy there are in Unit 4 and say what colour each one is.
